Part of a cat's charm is its independence and free spirit. It is possible however, to train your kitten to display the type of behaviour that suits you and your home.

Kittens are very inquisitive and eager to explore and learn which sometimes develops behaviours that may not suit you. For example good basic training behaviour may be to discourage your cat from jumping up on the kitchen bench or the stove top.

The best way to discourage your kitten from bad habits is to say "No" in a loud firm voice. If this doesn't work, a quick squirt with a spray bottle or water pistol will get the message through. In order to effectively train your kitten though, when they display unwanted behaviour, you must be there on the spot in order to punish them. If not, your kitten will not associate your reprimand with their behaviour, which will lead to them becoming stressed and confused.

NEVER hit your kitten as a means of discipline - this only leads to a timid kitten and further frustration for you.
