My cat currently lives in a very rural area on a farm where he has plenty of space to explore. He isn't allowed inside the house any more but for roughly the first year of his life he was raised as an indoor cat and would rarely go outside. I am now thinking of having him brought down to Brisbane to live with me again, instead of my parents, as a predominantly indoor cat.

When he was a kitten he would always sleep in my bed with me and I was always the one to pat him and play with him and he always gets very happy and affectionate towards me when I go to my parents house to visit, and likes to spend alot of time with me while I am there.

I am wondering whether it is a good idea, health wise and emotionally, for me to now bring my cat to Brisbane where he would be inside most the time but still play outside when I am home with him?

I would really love for him to be here as he seems happier when I am around but I don't want him to get sick, upset, or have something terrible happen to him because he is not used to a big city. We live on a main road so there is alot of cars and noise.

Thanks

I have moved a lot and taken my animals with me. I think if the cat is so attached to you then if you left it, it would fret and pine for you. Cats are usually very adaptable and if you have the right amount of things in the new home for it to play with when you aren't there it should be OK. Get a scratching board and maybe grow some catnip inside in a container, the cat should be OK it will probably want to get outside for a while but you will have to be stern and not let it out by itself, I always put butter or margarine on my anmals paws and I have never had one run away yet when I have moved.

I hope that some of this has been a help.

I agree with Jenna, I have always put butter on my cats feet too, and my cats have moved around with me alot also. Never lost a cat, usually when they r not desexed they mite go walkabout. My cat Ripper was left on a farm with my ex when i moved, missed her heaps, after about 2 years when i got my own place i brought her home to suburbia, she was getting old then probably about 11 or 12years so she was contented to stay at home, only lost her last year at 19years old, old age really, I have 2 othercats now, 4 and 3, which moved with me 3 years ago from a house in the bush back to suburbia again, the youngest Lucky is a very indoor cat, sometimes its hard to get her outside, 4 year old Coco is very much the outdoor cat and loves to hunt, and play so she is a bit of a bugger, all cats even Lucky love to be outside in the dark, this is when you dont want your cat out cause they do the most damage to other animals at this time, really have to look at the cats temperament, if it likes indoors now it will most probably be the same when it moves although i think lucky became an indoor cat because she is scared of the noises outside, lucky she has a good sized backyard. All in all, if its your cat, maybe it should be with you, they always love their owner.
