I'd suggest getting a scratching post for when she's a little bit older so you can train her to sharpen her claws there, rather than on the furniture. I'd also suggest a litter tray with the clumping-style litter, and keep it not too far from her food bowl so you can put her in there after she eats so she knows that's where to go, assuming she's going to be a house-trained indoor cat. It's much easier to start kitties off with good habits, rather than try and retrain later on. :)

Hi! Well firstly how exciting on getting a kitten! You are in for a lot of fun, food and water bowls are needed as well as a litter tray/box for toiletting with some cat litter inside, something else to remember is that kittens are quite inquisitive and do enjoy play time, so some toys would be fun, for example a small ball, wool or a ribbon that you can play with your kitten, or as I have used for my cats, a foil ball ( you know aluminium foil rolled into a smallish sized ball) it looks shiny and your kitten can chase it if you flick it around! Make it about the size that can fit into your hand so its not too small that way it wont be eaten and play with it whilist supervised. My cats are now 15yrs and almost 13yrs old, but my boy still enjoys playing ball. You can buy cat toys from lots of different stores, like supermarkets, petshops, veterinary clinics etc. Otherwise be creative and use like I mentioned a ribbon, string of wool, ball, even a box so kitten can hide inside and play hide n seek! Goodluck and best of all kitten needs a best friend, to love, share experiences and play with...someone like you :) hope this helps.

Apart from the standard cat supplies required if she is a kitten away from her mum, maybe give her a little teddy bear of something cuddly to keep her company.

Congratulations on your new baby..... It is an exciting time having a new kitten in the home. As suggested before - a Scratching post is very important to help keep babies claws away from the furniture and a litter- box with litter. Clumping litter was suggested but if I may - please not till baby is at least 1 yr old. I have had a few breeder friends lose kittens from clumping litter. It is a good product but not for kittens. Of course it is up to you - but I would suggest recycled newspaper e.g. Breeders choice or Max's Cat litter - both of these can be found in Supermarkets.
A lot of toys - these need not be expensive. I have found kittens and cats love Ping Pong balls. They make a nice noise as they roll across the floor. Also the inside tube of a toilet roll, the Aluminium ball is a good idea as well - 1 of my cats still comes running when he hears Aluminium rustling.
Good Luck with your new baby and hope all goes well.

try getting some toys. Kittens love toys that make sound, and try one that you can interact with. good luck, Jacqui and Tiggs.

Congrats on getting your little bundle of fur. It's a good start to have a bed with a water bowl etc. because she's been seperated from her mum and (if she had any) brothers and sisters. What might comfort her is one of these fake kittens that has a heart beat and creates an illusion of it breathing and keeps your kitty warm. Or just a old watch that ticks under her blanket. When we first got my kitten Bonnie it helped her. And for about 2 weeks when you get her you should let her sleep in a cage at night because it prevents them from sneeking around and chewing on live wires. :D Hope I helped. OH P.S don't forget the scratching post others... your couch will end up looking like mine... believe me... get her one ASAP

Kittens will love you even more if you give them toys to play with, but remember treat kittens like you would a new born baby – toys need to be safe and not small enough for them to swallow. An effective toy is a ping pong ball or toilet roll tube – anything that will move or roll around when they touch them. A scratch pad is also a useful thing to introduce your kitten to early on, especially if you want to save your sofas!

I have to agree about the clumping, clay based litters. Please don't use them with kittens. The dust gets onto their fur, then they ingest it when they clean themselves. The dust becomes glue when it is wet, and has been known to completely block their intestinal tract. It can't be reversed by your vet, and will kill the kitten if this happens. Just to be sure, I avoid it completely. Personally, I use either crystal litter, or Max's.
Almost anything is a toy to a kitten, mine particularly loves the kids plastic ten pin bowling pins. As one end tapers, they roll around unpredicatably, and Hush uses it to create havoc in the lounge room. I think she has played with them more than the kids! Also, bubbles. If you want, you can get cat safe ones at the pet shop, but they are heaps of fun to chase, and then they just disappear. Confusing, but fun.

I have not got any litter for my furbabies yet but our breeder did say she use the Breeder Choice, this is safe for them to use? Which bag is it? http://www.fibrecycle.com.au/
