To stay or stray?

That certainly is a big question. Some claim that, as your kitten grows up, she'll only be happy if she’s allowed to roam free and express her natural interest in mice and birds. Others suggest that you should keep her safe indoors where she'll find everything she could possibly need.

An outside chance

Kittens are often seen as independent and freedom-loving, and as such you would expect them to be happier in the great outdoors. Your little hunter will certainly get all the variety and stimulation she needs. The problem is that the same rural environment, which offers her natural opportunities for hunting, climbing and exploring can also be quite dangerous. Increased road traffic, plant sprays and rodent poisons are the new nemeses of the modern housecat. Remember, though, that she has a powerful survival instinct, so don't worry if she's out and about all the time.

It’s safe inside

Obviously, keeping your kitten inside will protect her from the dangers lurking in the outside world. In fact, kittens feel perfectly comfortable in a house which they have established as their territory.

If you do opt for a stay-at-home kitten, it's really important that you create a rich environment for her, so that she can follow her natural instincts for playing and hunting. She'll need lots of toys, a good scratching post, places to climb, and a spotlessly clean litter tray. And don’t forget, the house can be a dangerous place too. Fireplaces, hobs, chimneys and unsecured windows, as well as electrical equipment or cables, could pose a threat for your little adventurer. Keep an eye on her though and she'll be fine.

Which side are you on?

There is no wrong or right, letting your kitten roam free or keeping her indoors both have their advantages and their disadvantages. It's up to you and your kitten to decide what's best.
