Frequently Asked Questions

How much wet food should I feed my cat?

The right amount depends on your cat's age, weight, and activity level. Use the feeding guide on the pack as a starting point and adjust to maintain a healthy body condition. A typical adult cat (around 4kg) needs roughly 3–4 pouches per day if fed wet food only, or fewer when combined with dry. For optimal health, we recommend mixed feeding. Always ensure fresh drinking water is available.

What flavours are included in WHISKAS® Mixed Favourites in Jelly?

Each pack contains a tasty mix of three favourites — Beef in Jelly, Chicken in Jelly, and Tuna Flavour in Jelly — so your cat can enjoy variety at every meal. Available in 12, 24, and 36 pouch packs of 85g each.

Can I feed my cat wet food and dry food together?

Yes. Mixed feeding is a great way to give your cat the best of both. WHISKAS® wet food adds moisture, tempting aroma, and tender texture cats love, while dry food offers dental benefits and convenience. When feeding both dry and wet food, simply halve the recommended quantities of each product.

How should I store WHISKAS® wet cat food, and how long can I leave it out?

Unopened pouches can be stored in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Once opened, transfer any uneaten food to a sealed container, refrigerate, and use within 24–48 hours. Don't leave wet food out for more than 1–2 hours at room temperature, as it can spoil — discard any leftovers and wash your cat's bowl regularly.

Why Do Cats Love Wet Food? The Secret's in Their Nature

They Were Born for ThisYour cat is, in the most wonderful sense, a creature of instinct. And those instincts — honed over thousands of years — are still running the show every time you reach for that pouch.Their wild ancestors were hunters. They caught prey. And that prey — warm, full of moisture, rich with the flavour of real meat — is essentially what wet food has always been mimicking. The high moisture content, the protein-forward recipes, the tender texture: all of it speaks directly to something deep and instinctive in your cat that says yes, this is right. When they go crazy for a pouch, they aren't being dramatic. They're being exactly who they are.The Smell Gets Them Every TimeA cat's nose is extraordinary. It's their primary way of understanding the world, including whether dinner is worth their while. Wet food has a rich, immediate aroma that dry food simply cannot match. The moisture in a wet pouch carries scent out into the air the moment you open it, creating that irresistible signal that says real food, right now. For your cat, it's the difference between a whisper and a shout. This matters especially for cats who are a little older, feeling under the weather, or simply selective about what passes inspection. The strong, appetising aroma of wet food often makes the difference between eating well and leaving the bowl untouched. It's the Taste of Real MeatYour cat cannot taste sweetness. What they can taste, with remarkable precision, is the deep, savoury richness of real meat and fish — the kind of flavour food lovers call umami.Wet food genuinely tastes better to them. The natural proteins, juices, and meat inclusions in a wet pouch deliver the flavour her palate is specifically built to seek out and savour. It's also why cats so reliably gravitate toward protein over anything else. When your cat turns their nose up at something that smells too starchy, they're not being fussy. They're doing exactly what their instincts tell them.Texture Is EverythingEvery cat owner knows: their cat has opinions about texture. Firm, long-held, non-negotiable opinions. And they're not wrong to.The tender give of morsels in jelly, the rich slip of a gravy-coated recipe, the satisfying pull of shredded meat — these aren't trivial details. They're part of what makes a meal feel like a meal. Some cats are devoted jelly enthusiasts. Others are passionate about gravy. None of them are wrong — they simply know what they like. Following their lead is not spoiling them. It's listening.A Natural Way to Keep Her HydratedCats have a naturally low thirst drive. Their ancestors lived in dry environments and got almost all of their daily fluid intake from the food they caught. This instinct hasn't changed. Many cats simply don't drink enough from a water bowl to compensate for a dry-food-only diet — not because they're stubborn, but because thousands of years of biology says water comes from food.Wet food delivers that hydration naturally with every meal. For most cats, this makes a meaningful contribution to their overall wellbeing — keeping them more comfortable, more energetic, and better supported in their urinary health day to day.Good for Their Urinary HealthConnected to that hydration story is something cat owners — especially those with cats who've had urinary issues — should understand. When a cat is well-hydrated, their urine is naturally more dilute. And dilute urine is protective — it's less likely to lead to the crystal formation and bladder irritation that can cause discomfort and vet visits. Cats on wet food diets tend to stay better hydrated than those on dry-only diets, which is one of the reasons vets often recommend wet food as part of a care approach for cats prone to urinary tract issues. It's not a cure-all, and every cat's needs are different — your vet is always the best guide for cats with existing health conditions. But as a daily habit for a healthy cat, feeding wet food is one of the most natural ways to support them from the inside out.Is Wet Food Better for Cats Than Dry?For most cats, wet food offers real advantages that go beyond taste. It's closer to what their body is designed to eat — high in moisture, rich in protein, lower in the starchy carbohydrates that don't align with their natural diet. It's more appealing to fussy eaters, older cats, and cats with sensitive appetites. That said, dry food has genuine merits too — it's convenient and suits cats who like to graze. Many owners favour a combination: wet food at mealtimes, dry as a complement. If your cat has specific health needs, their vet will help you find the right balance. For a healthy cat, a high-quality wet food like WHISKAS® cat food is, in their considered opinion, the obvious choice. How Much Wet Food Should I Feed My Cat?Getting the portions right means thinking about their age, size, activity level, and whether you're feeding wet food on its own or alongside dry.Kittens: Choose a kitten-specific wet food and follow the feeding guide on pack — their nutritional needs are quite different to adults.Adult cats (1–7 years): Most adult cats do well on 3–4 standard pouches per day when fed wet food as their primary diet. Adjust based on her size and activity level.Senior cats (7+): Older cats benefit most from wet food. Reduced appetite, dental sensitivity, and a higher need for hydration all point toward wet food as the best choice in their later years.Mixed feeding: Scale down wet portions and check the feeding guides on both products to avoid overfeeding.Always keep fresh water available, and when in doubt, check with your vet for a guide tailored to your cat.Feed their NatureEvery time you peel back a WHISKAS® pouch, you're speaking directly to something instinctive — a deep, ancient intelligence that knows exactly what nourishment looks, smells, and tastes like.Browse the irresistible range of WHISKAS® pouches for your kitty's next meal. Frequently Asked QuestionsWhy does my cat only want to eat wet food?Because it speaks to their instincts in a way dry food simply doesn't — it's higher in moisture, richer in aroma, more protein-forward, and closer to what they evolved to eat. Once they've discovered it, going back feels like a downgrade. Which, from their perspective, it probably is.Is it okay to feed cats wet food every day?Absolutely. A complete and balanced wet food diet can be your cat's primary daily food. Just look for products labelled "complete" to make sure she's getting everything she needs.Does wet food help with cat hydration?Significantly. Many cats don't drink enough water independently — they're built to get hydration through their food. Wet food naturally addresses this with every meal. Can I mix wet and dry cat food?Yes, and it's a popular choice. Wet food at mealtimes, dry food for grazing — it's a combination that works well for many cats and many lifestyles. Is wet food good for older cats? It's often the best choice. Older cats can become fussier eaters, may have dental sensitivities, and benefit significantly from the extra hydration wet food provides.

How long can I leave cat food out?

A cat’s eating habits are not always consistent, and many cat owners will be familiar with the sight of a half-finished bowl of food, or a meal with only a few bites missing. Sometimes this means your cat has had enough, but often they will return to the food later in the day for another helping. This brings about the question: how long can I leave cat food out? In this article, WHISKAS looks at when you should leave your cat’s food out, and when to clear it away.

How many times a day should I feed my cat?

Cats are often the king or queen of the household, with their adoring owners waiting on them hand and foot ready to meet their every need. For this reason, it can be tempting to feed your cat whenever they demand to be fed, rather than sticking to a feeding schedule. However, this isn’t always healthy for your cat, and can quickly lead to weight gain. So, how many times a day should you feed a cat? WHISKAS investigates… How often should you feed a cat?How often you should feed your cat depends on a few factors; for example, how old they are. Cats should be fed according to their life stage, whether that’s kitten, adult, or senior. It will also depend on your schedule and when you’ll be around to feed them. As cats have small stomachs – roughly the size of a ping-pong ball – they are best suited to eating little and often. Cats who are fed large portions may become sick after meals or put on weight over time. Therefore, a few smaller meals a day should work well for your cat instead of one large one. If you decide on set mealtimes, make sure to stick to these times of day, as cats like routine. If you are out of the house during the day, feeding once in the morning and once in the evening will be enough, as well as leaving a bowl of dry kibble out for your cat to snack on throughout the day. Although some cat owners choose to ‘free feed’ their cat and leave out food all day for them to graze on, this makes it hard to monitor how much your cat is eating and can lead to weight gain. This is especially true if you have more than one cat, as it is difficult to tell who is eating what. To combat this, consider feeding your cats separately as part of your feeding routine. How much food should I feed my cat?How much food you give your cat ultimately depends on their breed and lifestyle. For example, if you have an indoor cat, they might not need as much food as outdoor cats.If you feed your cat wet food, one pouch per mealtime should be enough. If your cat doesn’t eat the whole pouch, you could refrigerate it and when your cat is hungry again, gently warm the food back up in the microwave. However, if your cat repeatedly doesn’t eat all their wet food in one sitting, giving them dry food might be a better option, so they can return to the food when they want. If wet food is left out for extended periods of time it goes off and will have to be thrown away. If you only feed your cat dry food, make sure they have access to fresh drinking water, too. Most owners like to give their cats a mix of wet and dry food for variety. Monitor your cat’s weight carefully to determine whether you are feeding them the right amount. If your cat starts to look overweight, you will need to reduce their food intake. To assess your cat’s physical condition, use your hands to carefully feel around their ribs and waist. If it isn’t easy to feel their ribcage and you can’t easily see their waist, they are likely overweight. Always ask a vet for advice on helping your cat to lose weight so you can do it carefully and safely.Similarly, if your cat’s ribs, backbone and waist are visible, they might be underweight; you should ask a vet for advice on how to safely increase their weight. Usually pet food packaging contains helpful guidelines on how much to give your pet. Alternatively, you can use a cat feeding guide or ask a vet for advice if you are unsure. How often should I feed my kitten? As kittens have a lot of growing to do, they need to eat up to four times the calories per pound of body weight as adult cats. However, as their stomach is a lot smaller than that of an adult cat, kittens need to be fed numerous small meals a day to give them the correct calorie and nutrient intake. After kittens are weaned, at about six to eight weeks, they can start eating up to six servings of specially formulated kitten food. As your kitten gets bigger, you can gradually reduce the number of meals you give them per day until they reach adulthood, or around one year of age. How often should I feed a senior cat?Senior cats have different nutritional needs to younger cats and may require a special senior cat food. Older cats tend to spend more time relaxing and sleeping, so they do not need as many calories as younger, more active cats. They may need additional nutrients, though; for example, taurine. The WHISKAS® Senior range contains extra taurine to help your cat’s vision and heart, as well as zinc and linoleic acid for healthy skin and coat, and phosphorus to help their bladder function normally. With this in mind, you may find that your senior cat is happy with just one or two meals a day. However, you should always ask a vet’s advice on how best to feed them.
